Football at the heart of Crawley retirement community

It was football fever, not romance, that got the hearts of three Crawley retirees all of a flutter this Valentine’s Day when they were invited to watch Crawley Town Football Club take on Altringham as the club’s VIP guests for the day.
When residents at McCarthy & Stone’s retirement development Millfield Court on Ifield Drive received the invitation, football enthusiasts Peter Plunkett, Ron Coleman and Alf Herbert jumped at the opportunity to see their local team in action.
Peter Plunkett, who refereed local matches in Crawley throughout his life, explains: “Football is a life long passion of mine and it was wonderful to see my local team play again – and be treated like a VIP for the day! All my friends know how football mad I am and it’s one of the reasons I bought my apartment at Millfield Court; the development overlooks the playing fields so I can watch the local friendlies to my heart’s content!”
Peter’s neighbour, Alf Herbert, agrees: “Having an apartment that overlooks the playing fields is a real bonus for any football fan! And it’s great to have met some other like minded people at Millfield Court who enjoy football as much as I do!”
Peter and Alf were also joined by Ron Coleman and his wife, Pat. They too are no strangers to the sport. Ron comments: “Our grandson plays for the Crawley Youth Team so we are regularly at the club to watch him play. However, this time, we got to do it in style! We had a wonderful pre-match dinner and then enjoyed a 1-0 win to Crawley!”
Victor Marley, chairman of Crawley Town Football Club, comments: “When McCarthy & Stone kindly agreed to sponsor the ‘man of the match’ trophy for our game against Altringham, we discovered there were some real football fanatics living at Millfield Court. We were only too delighted to extend an invitation to them to come and see the match - and even better, we won! As a local football club, we play an important role in the community. It’s always appreciated when we receive support from local businesses, such as McCarthy & Stone, and we’re pleased to be able to give something back to the community in return.”
Crawley Town next play at home on Saturday 27th February when they take on Luton. For more information about the club, log on to crawleytownfc.com.
