Catherine and George Couzens took a gamble when they bought a townhouse at Barratt’s Hawthorn Meadows development in Whippingham, but it proved to be the lucky break they had dreamed about.

“We chose a three-storey townhouse because we were getting married and hoped to start a family,” said Catherine (34). “We moved in March 2009 and, in less than a year, I’ve conceived and given birth to a lovely baby girl, Eva.

“We were able to buy a family home because we took advantage of a shared equity scheme and we really love the house. It’s very spacious and comes with three bedrooms, a garage and garden – perfect for a young family.

“When we relocated to the Isle of Wight from Lymington in Hampshire 18 months ago we were both able to get jobs,” Catherine continued. “I work in IT and George is a marine engineer – he’s working just five minutes away from home in East Cowes.

“We always wanted to settle on the island as we have family connections here and now we’re living in a beautiful area – we can see the River Medina and the local countryside from the house.

“The Barratt staff were really helpful,” Catherine added. “Even now, they respond immediately to any queries, so we are very pleased with the service.

“Moving to Hawthorn Meadows really was the right move for us – we’re a real family now, with a young baby, a Border Collie puppy and two cats, and we really love it here.”

When complete, Hawthorn Meadows will offer 507 homes designed to suit a wide range of buyers – from families to people looking for a holiday home. Current availability includes one-bedroom coach houses priced from £104,995; two and three-bedroom houses priced from £162,000 and riverside townhouses priced from £249,995.

Buyer incentives include part exchange for people moving to a larger property and the government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme for first-time buyers, key workers and people who are currently renting.

Hawthorn Meadows enjoys a village setting close to the River Medina and the local mooring site, and is the perfect retreat for yachting enthusiasts. There is easy access to the rest of the island and to the mainland.
