I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer’s

Judith Fox’s critically acclaimed and compassionate book becomes an emotional photography exhibition “I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer’s”, premiering in London from Thursday 1st April – Saturday 3rd April 2010 at the Cork Street Gallery in association with Alzheimer’s Society and Pfizer.

Three years into their marriage, Judith Fox’s husband, Dr. Edmund Ackell, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Over the course of the next twelve years, Fox watched as the man who used to perform surgery, fly planes, and run universities, forgot how to turn on the coffee machine, make a phone call, or remember what his wife had told him two minutes earlier. Fox dedicates this exhibition to other caregivers in an effort to reduce their sense of isolation, and to help de-stigmatise the disease.

Judith states, “One of the ways I see my world more clearly is through my photography. Photographing my husband has been an intimate and loving process, as well as a way of keeping him close as he was leaving me. My husband and I were partners on “I Still Do.” Ed was not only my muse and cheerleader throughout the making of the book but, because of his willingness to put a face in front of the statistics, he’s helped humanize an illness that has been in the closet for too many years.”

This pictorial tribute to her husband provides a rare insight dealing with issues that face all of us - loving, aging, humour, trust and mortality - as well as living with Alzheimer’s. The visual portrayal of the disease embraces the reality of loving a spouse who is no longer able to remember.
