Top Easter holiday destinations
According to the results of a study conducted by hotel price comparison site trivago.co.uk, British citizens have predominantly chosen to spend their Easter holidays abroad.
Distance is clearly not an obstacle, for the study has revealed two faraway entries in the British Top 10 list: Dubai and Bangkok.
UK Travellers Going Further
British travellers are taking full advantage of their Easter holidays this year and going to distant locations. Whereas most other European countries favoured cities closer to home, British travellers chose Dubai and Bangkok as their second and fourth favourite travel destinations, respectively. Several other distant destinations narrowly missed a place in the Top 10: Hong Kong (11th place), Sharm el Sheik (13th place), New York City (14th place), Istanbul (15th place) and Koh Samui (18th place). A fair distribution of European cities also ended up in the Top 10, with Barcelona claiming third place, Budapest and Paris in fifth and sixth place, and Stockholm, Rome and Brussels sharing the seventh spot on the list.
Few British cities in the Top 50
UK cities did not figure highly on the list of favourite British travel destinations. In fact, when looking at UK travellers’ top 50 favourite Easter destinations, only eight British cities appeared: London (1st place), Edinburgh (10th place), Manchester (12th place), Glasgow (22nd place), Brighton (24th place), York (30th place), Birmingham (32nd) and Fort William (48th). France, the Netherlands and Poland echoed this trend, with only five, six and eight domestic cities in their individual Top 50s. The reverse was true in countries like Italy and Germany, both of which had eighteen local cities appearing in their respective Top 50s. The propensity for travelling to domestic destinations was even more pronounced in Spain, where the number of cities in the Top 50 was twenty-four, i.e. forty-eight percent.
European Preferences
Much like the UK, most of the European countries chose their capitals as their number one Easter destination. Only in Greece and the Netherlands have foreign cities claimed first place; Greek travellers have overwhelmingly decided to visit Rome, while the Dutch are more interested in going to Berlin.
London is still popular with European travellers. In Spain, London was one of only three foreign cities to make their Top 10 and claimed seventh place. London made third place in the Greek and Italian lists, fourth place in Germany, fifth in France and eighth in Poland. More striking was London’s lack of appeal for the Dutch: the British capital was relegated to thirty-fourth place – far behind other English-speaking destinations like New York (eighteenth place), Sydney (twenty-second place) and Las Vegas (twenty-fourth place).
