Bookings surge for Norfolk holiday business

21st April 2010 Print

Britain’s new found love affair with the ‘staycation’ looks set to blossom with one of Norfolk’s holiday businesses reporting a strong Easter trade and a further surge in bookings.

Having seen a seven per cent rise last year the 5 Star Vauxhall Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth is reporting an additional 10 per increase in 2010 - and its bosses think this could mark a major change for the way we holiday.

“Last year many people almost stumbled into a UK holiday mainly fuelled by three things; the recession, fear of unemployment and a rocketing Euro,” said Roger Finney, Vauxhall Holiday Park’s marketing manager.

“In 2009 holiday makers were looking for value for money from their UK break which is why the self catering & camping sectors performed so well. People were still determined to get away but were being more careful with their money.

“I’m encouraged we are now seeing this momentum continue; if things stay the way they are bookings in 2010 will again be significantly up.

“If as an industry we can ensure people have another great experience and we keep delivering quality then there is every chance we will have convinced them to look on the UK as their number one holiday choice - which would be a major achievement.

“There are of course challenges; people are increasingly leaving booking until the last minute so we need to be ready to turn things around very quickly. We are not just competing with other accommodation in Great Yarmouth or Norfolk but also other parts of the UK so we must continue to be on top of our game.

“Another challenge is the pound has strengthened against the Euro by over 10 per cent year on year. It may well rise further once the uncertainty of the general election is over and a new government is seen to be taking steps to reduce public debt.

“Many countries in the Eurozone, particularly Spain, have also been marketing themselves aggressively and reducing prices to make them more competitive.

“But overall I am convinced the UK tourism industry is in for another highly successful year.”
