Raiders of the Lost Kasbah

28th April 2010 Print

Walks Worldwide has announced a new 8-day trip to Morocco entitled Raiders of the Lost Kasbah, departing 2 October. A spirit of adventure is required for this ‘reccee’ trip, which will be led by Morocco expert and Walks Worldwide founder Mike Wynne, before the final itinerary is added to next year’s programme.

The holiday begins by following the old caravan trade route across the Tizi n'Telouet to reach the principal home of the Glaoua at Telouet itself. Here the group will visit the atmospheric ruins of the Fortress Kasbah at Telouet which played such an important role in the history of Morocco.

Moving on, the small group (max. 8 people) will enter the almost lunar like landscape of the Adrar Taqqat before descending into an incredibly fertile valley which is home to tiny ochre coloured Kasbah villages, inhabited by Berbers for thousands of years.

Next up is a spectacular gorge and a trek through terraced fields to reach another Glaoua Kasbah at Tamdakht, before hiking to the iconic Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou (reaching it early before day trippers arrive) and a chance to see the sun rise from the top of the Ksar the following morning.

Dating back as far as 757 A.D. the fortified town of Ait Ben Haddou is probably better known in recent times as the backdrop for scenes from several Hollywood blockbusters including: Gladiator, Jewel of the Nile, Lawrence of Arabia, Alexander, and The Mummy.

The final stop is Ouarzazate before returning to Imperial Marrakech with a chance to enjoy the vibrant Djeema El Fna (the main square) where the food stalls, musicians, acrobats and snake charmers arrive at dusk to ply their trade.

The trip is graded as moderate/strenuous, with hiking at medium altitude on some days, and costs from £435 pp (two sharing). This includes ground transportation, 7 nights’ accommodation, most meals, guide and mule support.
