Bohemian Rhapsody in the Czech Republic

28th April 2010 Print
Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is not just Prague. Just over an hour to the northeast of Prague is Bohemia, and the Czech Paradise. World Walks are offering a village to village self-guided walking holiday in this frequently overlooked but exceptionally beautiful territory.

The name "czesky raj" (Czech Paradise) was given to the area by the intellectual and social elite of the second half of the 19th century.

One of the most striking features of the area are its sandstone 'rock cities', composed of huge clusters of vertical stone boulders and pillars that rise out of the landscape or lie hidden among the forests. The forests themselves are beautiful, with a complete absence of sound apart from birdsong and the rapping of woodpeckers. Superb castles and chateaux, handsome small towns, and excellent beer turn this into a walk of exceptional contrasts and interest. Prices are very reasonable indeed, as the Czech Republic is outside the Euro zone.

The walking is generally easy and simple to follow, whilst public transport can shorten the walks if required. Accommodation is in small, comfortable hotels, with substantial dinners and breakfasts. Luggage transportation, maps and route notes are all provide. Prague is within easy reach, so time can easily be spent there either before or after the walk.
