The Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil, Somerset, has been chosen as the venue for the UK’s 2010 Silverline Power Tool Drag Racing Championship which will take place on the 25th and 26th September 2010.

Great fun for the whole family, the crazy sport of power tool drag racing involves transforming hand held power tools into lean mean drag racing machines!

With a total prize fund of £3,000 up for grabs, there are two sides to the event – ride-on and non-ride-on. The ride-on class will take place on the Yeovilton runways at the rear of the museum.

Commonly used tools in the ride-on class are petrol chainsaws and leaf blowers. Some competitors start with the frame of an existing vehicle such as a go kart, while others start from scratch.

The non ride-on side of the event will take place on an inside track underneath Concorde and will involve the use of smaller power tools. This class does not require the dragster to be ridden and consequently, smaller tools such as belt sanders, angle grinders, drills and circular saws are commonly used.

Previous events have been covered by Channel 5’s Gadget Show and competitors have come from as far as America to take part.

In addition to the power tool Drag Racing, visitors to the Museum will also witness a battle for robot supremacy as the Robo Challenge teams will be battling it out in their survival of the fittest robot. Meanwhile, outside on the runway, Dragster driver Dave ‘Grumpy’ Wilson will be warming the tyres of his 3,500BHP FIA Champion Dragster which has a recorded top speed of 265mph.
