Balding men lose more than just their hair

27th May 2010 Print

Men are losing more than just their hair when it comes to balding – they also lose confidence and sex appeal. A survey of nearly 1,500 men today paints the picture of hair loss in men, alongside their attitudes to grooming and looking after their luscious locks.

• 40% of respondents would rather be single than bald
• 64% believe a full head of hair is more attractive to the opposite sex
• 23% of men admit they stick their head in the sand when it comes to hereditary hair loss
• 82% of men, despite their worries, have never bought a hair loss product or treatment
• For those that have, 51% of men purchasing a hair loss product do so to prevent thinning
• 56% of men believe that losing their locks reduces their chances of attracting potential partners

Hair loss for today’s modern man remains a worry but he’s still pretty clueless and at a loss in terms of what to do about it all. There’s a worrying lack of awareness when it comes to the latest clinically proven treatments. 64% of respondents said they were already experiencing hair loss – with more than half admitting they felt less confident as a result. This same percentage (64%) of men also felt that a full head of hair is more attractive to the opposite sex. Despite this – and all the associated fears – a staggering 82% of men have never bought a hair loss treatment or product.

Why don’t men do anything about thinning hair?
They’re surrounded by old wives’ tales of washing their head in cold water to restore their crowning glory and a quick internet search reveals nearly 47 million results on hair loss exist to cloud men’s opinion and judgement.

What the experts say:
Award-winning hair dresser Mark Woolley combs through the problem: “It’s time for men to ditch that horrendous comb over and get on top of hair loss. They need proper advice and a trusted, proven product to fight the onset of balding. When clients sit in the chair, who are concerned about losing their hair I always ensure they’re given the correct advice. Pie in the sky promises of miracle cures just don’t cut it, I want to make sure they have all the information they deserve and avoid any confusion.”

Marilyn Sherlock, Chairman of the Institute of Trichologists and Hair Force Member said, “Too many hair loss treatments out there have not been proven to work. Hair loss can have a significant impact on a person’s self confidence and self esteem, it is worrying to think that people are surrounded by bogus hair loss cures. If you’re serious about solving your hair loss problem, you need to be able to choose a product that has been clinically proven and is right for you – otherwise there could be a lot of unhappy men out there!”

What are blokes going to do about it?
So, unlike nearly a quarter of our men surveyed (23%) don’t bury your head in the sand when it comes to hair loss. Turn to trusted sources of information that will give you the right advice and suggest the most relevant product.

Regaine is one of the few products proven in clinical trials to regrow hair. It contains the active ingredient Minoxidil, which scientists believe aids blood flow to your follicles - stimulating and prolonging your hair’s growing stage ‘Anagen’, for a thicker, fuller head of hair. It has been shown in trials to re-grow hair in 3 out of 5 men, with results noticeable in as little as 8 weeks.
