Wild Photography Holidays, the innovative travel company, specialising in small-group photography holidays in wild and inaccessible places, has announced the details of its Spanish photography holiday this September which allows its intrepid guests to experience a little known part of Northern Spain, far removed from the overpopulated southern ‘costas’, by trekking through the mountains, forests and villages of the Picos de Europa.

Departing on 18th September the 8 day tour goes to the very heart of this magnificent mountain range, which is one of the most spectacular in the northern hemisphere. The wild and impressive landscape is characterised by soaring peaks and deep valley gorges, created by sharp spurs of ice from ancient glaciers and the powerful force of river water, providing a breathtaking backdrop in which to capture some truly memorable images.

The holiday travels mainly by foot in order to explore locations generally un-visited by photographers and is suited to those who like mountain walking and staying in friendly local accommodation each night. It is lead by Geraldine Westrupp, an experienced mountain guide with an intimate knowledge of the area and she is accompanied by Martin Samtleben who draws on his past experiences of working in the Picos to offer expert photographic guidance.

Along the way highlights will include a mountain walk through a seemingly in-penetrable amphitheatre of impressive limestone cliffs, past the narrows of Tournos de Liordes and into high mountain pastures, providing a superb location to capture the jagged peaks of the central and western massifs of the Picos. There is also time to explore and capture some rural images in a land that time has seemingly forgotten with a visit to the abandoned villages of the Beyos. The group will also traverse the Garganta del Cares with it’s deep ravines, exotic plant life, dizzying cliffs and ever changing light before journeying on to Sotres, the highest village in the Picos de Europa, where its possible to find old shepherd’s houses, constructed of stone and dotted around the ‘Majada’. The final part of the journey takes guests by 4×4 vehicle along the old mountain road that divides the eastern and central massifs to walk into the very heart of the amazing Karstic Picos landscape and capture the superb views of the mighty granite El Naranjo before descending by cable car into the valley.

Commenting on the tour Geraldine Westrupp said “This a truly magical photographic destination strongly reminiscent of Tolkien’s ‘hobbit land’, a really astonishing place and becoming popular for those who want to absorb the energy and peace of one of the last austere wilderness landscapes in Europe and capture some really exciting and different images”.

The 8 days holiday costs £1,150 per person and includes all accommodation based on two sharing, breakfast, picnic lunch and all dinners, wine with meals, all in country transport suitable to the terrain, transfers to and from Santander airport, a guide and a photographic tutor including Lightroom tuition. Excludes flights to Santander*.
