British Pedal Car Grand Prix 2010 - New Forest
The 23rd British Pedal Car Grand Prix 2010 takes place on Sunday July 11 in the New Forest. This year 54 teams will battle for the 2010 championship over a new 1.4km circuit that starts and finishes at Ringwood’s Market Place in the New Forest.
Cars of all shapes and sizes, from high performance competition cars to those creatively designed purely to amuse, gather in the Furlong Centre from 10 am for viewing. Parade laps are at 1.30pm with 54 pedal cars on the grid to start at 2pm. The chequered flag is waved at 4pm and presentations, including the mandatory Champagne spraying, taking place at 4.15pm. And, the Concours d’Elegance is held on Saturday from 9am for spectators to get a sneak preview and witness practice springs on the roads.
The newly extended circuit (to accommodate the increase from 36 to 54 teams this year) is mostly flat, has room for up to 3 abreast to overtake on the fast sections, and a few notable corners. Spectators can walk the course and watch these wacky races from many different vantage points.
Each team has up to 4 drivers and one pit-pusher and there are classes for juniors (under 16s), ladies and overall winners. Each team has its own pit and drivers can make as many pit-stops or changes as they choose, adding to the spectator enjoyment.
Attracting up to 10,000 visitors, the event is held once every 2 years (the next one in 2012) in aid of selected local charities, including Tenovus Cancer Research (committed to the control of cancer through quality research, prevention/ education, counselling and patient care, Wave 105 Cash For Kids a charitable organisation committed to supporting local children under the age of 18, who are financially, socially, emotionally or physically disadvantaged and Help For Heroes.
