Persimmon gets tough on tans

Sun damage is a serious issue for everyone however, for those who work in the great outdoors they could be at risk from overexposure. This is why, contrary to the stereotypical builder who drinks copious amounts of tea, you’re more likely to see Persimmon construction staff slapping on the sunscreen whilst they work.

According to Cancer Research UK, the rate of men dying from the deadliest form of skin cancer has doubled over the past three decades, however the cancer is preventable if people avoid sunburn, the charity said.

Shaun Marjoram, construction director for Persimmon Homes Anglia, said: “We take the health and safety of all or workers extremely seriously and following the recent spell of hot, sunny weather feel that now is a good time to spread the ‘stay safe’ message to everyone who works outdoors.

“Whilst we all love the sunshine and take every advantage of the rays in an attempt to get a golden glow, sun exposure is no light issue, but is something which needs to be taken far more seriously.”

Cancer Research UK figures also reveal that in the late 70s fewer than 400 (1.5 per 100,000) men died from melanoma but now more than 1100 (3.1 per 100,000) men are dying from the disease . Shaun adds: “These figures are worrying and what people don’t realise is that they can still burn on a day when there is a thin layer or scattered cloud.

“We are encouraging all of our construction workers to apply sunscreen before the working day begins and to keep applying at regular intervals.”
