Celebrate the sea at the 2010 Queenie Festival

22nd June 2010 Print

The upcoming annual Isle of Man Queenie Festival promises to be another vibrant, fun-filled event. Created as a 'celebration of the sea', the Festival aims to spread the word about the delicious local Manx Queenies, a delicacy for visitors to enjoy.

The festival will also be raising awareness of the Isle of Man’s marine environment; promoting water sports and oceangoing leisure on the Island; and exploring the past, present and future of the Manx fishing industry.

Taking place from Friday 9th July until Sunday 11th July the Festival weekend will be packed with activities and events for visitors to take part in, from a trawler race to a mass charity swim in the sea.  For those bitten by the 'sea bug', there will also be the chance to try sailing, diving, snorkelling and kayaking, or even take part in the Isle of Man Open Water Swimming Championships.

During the day (Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th only), the action will centre around Paddy's Market and the Alfred Pier in Port St Mary, where there will be music, dance, cookery demonstrations and a Continental market. The Manx Wildlife Trust will also be on hand displaying touch tanks and there will be the opportunity to go Basking Sharks spotting from a boat.

On Friday evening, Port Erin Beach will be the place to be, with a lively tropical beach bar, live music, food stalls, and fun beach games.  On Saturday night, Festival spirit will abound at the 'Daunce ny Skeddan', the 'Herring Dance', which takes place at Port St Mary's Stonefield.

The Queenie Festival brings together the diverse interests connected to Manx waters. Go along and join the Celebration of the Sea at the 2010 Queenie Festival.
