Set to open in March 2011, Tongole Wilderness Lodge is a new eco tourism venture set in the rugged and breathtakingly beautiful 1,800km² Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, the third largest protected area in Malawi and one of the least known.

Tongole will be the first luxury lodge in the area, drawing those who seek an exceptional wilderness experience in one of Africa’s - and possibly Malawi’s last - truly unspoilt wildlife areas. With a focus on ethical and responsible practices, Tongole’s objectives include transforming disadvantaged local communities and benefiting biodiversity conservation. Profits will be used to help fund local projects focusing on education, conservation, health and economic empowerment.

The Lodge has been expertly designed by Blue Forest - an award winning company specialising in the bespoke design and construction of inspirational and sustainable buildings - to incorporate the very best of local Malawian culture whilst blending perfectly with its natural setting. Hand-built by a local workforce, Tongole combines a luxurious level of finish with traditional style and extensive use of local materials. Accommodation will consist of four luxurious, thatched riverside suites, each with large sunken baths and spectacular raised wooden decks overlooking the Bua River.

Nkhotakota supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna, offering landscapes not often encountered elsewhere in Africa. Large mammals found here include elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and sable antelope and there are plans to re-introduce species such as giraffe and even black rhino. Birdlife International has classified the Reserve as an Important Bird Area (IBA), with over 280 species of birds recorded. Activities will include guided walks, day and night game drives, fly camping, canoeing, fly fishing, cultural visits and visits to nearby Lake Malawi. Access to the Lodge is either by vehicle or chartered aircraft to Lilongwe Airport (an easy three hour drive).

Tongole Wilderness Lodge is offering a special introductory rate of US$400 per room per night, including all activities, meals and drinks but excluding transfers, reserve fees and international flights.
