A woman born at the former Wordsley Hospital has bought a new home on the Lawnswood Ride development replacing it.

What’s more, it was built by her dad - also born there - a managing director for Taylor Wimpey West Midlands, who are transforming the historic hospital site into houses for sale in Wordsley.

Sian Symons (age 22) has bought her first property at Lawnswood Ride off Stream Road after graduating from Cardiff University. She recently returned home to take up teacher training (for a position at Sandwell Academy) and could think of no better place to call home than the place where it all began.

Sian explains: “Cardiff is a fantastic city, but I was always going to come back. When my partner and I decided to get a place together we looked at houses for sale in Stourbridge and houses for sale in Dudley, but in the end there was no competition really. Wordsley is a fantastic location, still very aspirational, and Lawnswood Ride has lots of picturesque public open space worked into the overall development layout. It’s come round full circle really and having been born at the hospital, I feel like it was meant to be. I’ve got great memories of growing up around here, but at the same time it’s very exciting to be back and in at the start of a new community. Dad says they’re the best new houses in Stourbridge and it’s easily one of their best selling developments - and I can see why straight away, it’s got everything!

“We’ve gone for a spacious two bedroom Ragley apartment with open plan lounge/kitchen, ensuite to the master bedroom with double shower, additional bathroom, allocated parking and communal garden – and I’ve got Dad’s personal assurance that the build quality is superior to other houses for sale in Wordsley. My Mum, friends and grandparents still live nearby too, so I’ve got everything I could wish for right on the doorstep.”

John Symons, who hails from Gornalwood, also affectionately remembers the place where it all began for him, Sian and lots of other friends and relatives along the way. He explains: “Sian was one of the last to be born in the same annexes where I came into the world, because shortly after towards the end of 1988 they opened the new maternity wing, which for then was very state-of-the-art We’re now building superb family homes on that very spot and I find that appropriate and gratifying. I’m really proud of my roots and this area, so when this prime site became available for development some four years ago when Wordsley Hospital closed, the chance to build new homes in the Black Country was too good to miss. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to maintain the mature trees this area is known for. The best parts of the old building, like the famous clock tower, are also being retained and restored.”

Lawnswood Ride offers a bespoke selection of 86 properties (over 95% now sold) made up of four/five/six bedroom detached properties, three storey, three/four bedroom townhouses, plus designer apartments – with many overlooking the undulating public open space. Last availability is made up of a 2-bedroom Ragley apartment (like Sian’s) from just £109,500 and a Knighton four bedroom detached home with garage from only £272,500.

The Sales Centre off Auckland Road is open Thursday - Monday from 10am – 5pm.
