Isle of Wight tourism set for record year

2nd August 2010 Print

The Isle of Wight’s tourism industry looks like its heading for another record year but things are likely to get tougher according to one expert.

Having seen a 32 per cent increase in bookings in 2009, Wight Locations has had a further rise of 11 per cent this year – but according to its boss there appears to be a change in the way people are booking and taking their holidays.

“The fact we are again seeing double digit growth is excellent meaning success not only for us but also the Island’s wider tourism industry,” said Mark Curtis managing director of Wight Locations based in Seaview.

“But it has been far more difficult this year as people are becoming more and more price sensitive. Additionally we are seeing a strong increase in the ‘late market’ with people perhaps calling us on a Thursday and wanting to start their holiday on Saturday!

“That presents its own challenges as those people tend to want to barter on price. Talking to other holiday businesses on the Island I know we are not alone in facing this challenge.”

But according to Mr Curtis, who has seen his bookings increase by 400 per cent since he acquired the business five years ago, the market for UK holidaymakers will continue to get more and more competitive.

“While there has been much talk of the ‘Staycation’ the fact is the pound has strengthened by some 20 per cent against the Euro and countries such as Spain are adopting aggressive pricing strategies to tempt Brits back. Of course we are not just competing against Spain but other UK and worldwide destinations.

“So as an industry we have to ensure when people visit the Isle of Wight they have a great experience, with the emphasis on quality and customer service. We have a lot to offer visitors here on the Island so let’s all make sure we show it to its full potential.”
