The cost of staying with your car insurer
Sixty per cent of drivers who shopped around after receiving their car insurance renewal quote found a lower one, saving an average of £58, according to research from Which?.
Almost a third (30%) of those surveyed said they accepted their current insurer's renewal quote simply because they couldn't be bothered to shop around.
However, Which? strongly advises against choosing car insurance on the basis of cost alone. Many low-cost policies don't cover personal injury, legal expenses or replacement in the event of an accident.
The consumer champion rated NFU Mutual as the best provider with an overall score of 85%. Bottom of the table was the AA with 54%.
Peter Vicary-Smith, Chief Executive, Which? says: "Renewing your car insurance with your existing provider may be convenient, but our experts have found that this is one area where loyalty doesn't pay. Always shop around for the best deal and if you do want to stay with your existing insurer, never accept their initial quote. If you can find a better quote elsewhere, they'll often match it."
