A new riverside qalkway, linking east Newport with the city centre, was opened by Matthew Evans, Leader of Newport Council, and Keith Simmons, Regional Managing Director of Taylor Wimpey South Wales, in an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

A fundamental part of the City Vizion regeneration scheme, the new river walkway runs for 760 metres along the bank of the River Usk and will significantly improve the quality of public open space as well as providing easy access to the city centre.

In addition to the ease of access, the walkway is an integral part of a £4 million flood defence scheme that Taylor Wimpey built in 2008 to protect some 4,000 homes from the risk of flooding.

Pedestrians and cyclists will now have better accessibility up and down the river, residents of the Maindee ward and Eastern Newport have improved access to the city centre and rugby fans have a convenient route to the train and bus stations for Rodney Parade Rugby Ground.

Keith Simmons, Managing Director of Taylor Wimpey South Wales attended the opening and said: “The Riverside Walkway provides a high quality public realm and much improved access to the city. Residents of the stunning City Vizion apartments and people living in the surrounding area now have a quick, easy and direct link to Newport centre, including the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre and train and bus stations, so it will undoubtedly add to the quality and convenience of city-living.”

Councillor Matthew Evans, Leader of Newport City Council said: “The riverside area is fast becoming a focal point in the city. As we develop our cultural quarter around the theatre and new university, this walkway will provide an invaluable link. Coupled with the new developments and exciting events in the area, this part of Newport really is evolving.

Taylor Wimpey’s development City Vizion is located in the heart of Newport’s regeneration zone, just five minutes from Newport train station. Taylor Wimpey is currently planning to commence two further exciting phases next year, comprising approximately 158 new homes. The development has recently been recognised with a BRE Eco Homes Excellence Award, the world's leading rating tool for sustainable buildings and communities.
