Constable exhibition heads for Wiltshire

VisitWiltshire is expecting an influx of art lovers in 2011 when the city of Salisbury will host a John Constable exhibition at Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum.

The special exhibition, which comes to Salisbury between May and September 2011, is being organised to mark the 200th anniversary of the artist's arrival in Salisbury. The exhibition will include a selection of the artist's most important works including the famous 'Salisbury Cathedral from the water meadows.'

Constable is known to have had a huge love of Wiltshire and Salisbury in particular, and it has been widely accepted that John Fisher, a friend of Constable's and also a former Archdeacon in Salisbury, was a key inspiration for some of his greatest works.
This spectacular exhibition is one of a kind in the UK. It will provide enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to see a collection of Constable's paintings from both private owners and major art museums under one roof, including some that have been brought in from overseas. Salisbury Museum is located in the Cathedral Close where Constable stayed and painted, so visitors will be able to see the pictures and then explore the landscape that inspired him.

The full list of paintings to be exhibited is yet to be confirmed but there are expected to be over 50 works of art.

Further information about the exhibition will be posted on the Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum website at salisburymuseum.org.uk. The museum is open Monday - Saturday between 10am and 5pm. Entry to the museum and exhibition will be £8 for adults and £4 for children. Group rates for adults will be £6 per person.

Please note these prices are correct at time of writing but may be changed at the time the exhibition opens.

Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum is one of many attractions located within Cathedral Close in Salisbury. The works of art by Constable depict much of the surrounding area including Old Sarum and Stonehenge. For general information about visiting Salisbury, see visitwiltshire.co.uk/salisbury.
