Monument is hot stuff for visitors to London
Fascination with the Great Fire of London is rapidly turning Monument into a must-do attraction for overseas visitors.
Since reopening after a £4.5million revamp in February 2009, Sir Christopher Wren's classic Doric column, which commemorates the Great Fire of 1666 has been a hit with tourists, according to usage data from the London Sightseeing Pass.
During the summer months of 2009, Monument quickly established itself as one of the capital's most popular places to visit. And this summer London Pass users increased by a whopping 44%, moving Monument up the attractions league table to become one of the most popular attractions in London.
Situated at the heart of the city, the 61 metre (202ft) tower is ideally placed for sightseers who want to make the most of their day. Neighbouring sites of interest within walking distance include St Paul's Cathedral and Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition.
Amanda Truman, product marketing director, London Sightseeing Pass, said: "London's history remains the number one draw for overseas tourists. It has been really interesting to see what a great job has been done promoting the Monument - word really has spread far and wide, and tourists seem to relish the opportunity to get up high to look over Pudding Lane, where the fire began".
"Our figures show that people are making the most of being in the area. One of the benefits of the London Pass is you can pack in your sightseeing. St Paul's Cathedral and Shakespeare's Globe are reaping the rewards as a result, and that is great news for London."
According to London Pass usage data, the Tower of London remains the top most visited attraction (Jan-June 2010).
