Who do you call when holiday illness strikes?

17th September 2010 Print

As Britons start their winter sun getaways, leading independent travel insurance specialist,, is urging them to make sure they don’t forget the importance of good travel insurance to provide the support they need if the worst should happen.

For Pamela Miles, who was taken ill whilst on a cruise in Mauritius last year, the cover she and husband, Keith, took out was vital.

Suddenly taken very ill with a wasp sting, Pamela was rushed to a local hospital on the mainland. Keith immediately called the helpline and advisor, Simon Devenish, told him that all Pamela’s medical needs would be covered, as well as reassuring him that the hospital to which she had been admitted was on the company’s ‘approved’ list and therefore would be able to provide good quality care.

"Although I was extremely ill at the time, I felt so relieved to hear that there would be no problems with the insurance claim” said Pamela. “And the fact that the advisor was familiar with the hospital I was in and said it had a good reputation, gave Keith and I real peace of mind at a very frightening time.”

Pamela’s treatment took approximately nine hours, following which she was able to return to rejoin the cruise. "Upon my return back to the ship, we had another telephone call from Simon, who was just going off duty, but wanted to make sure that I was okay.

“Both Keith and I felt that we received an outstanding level of service. We are so glad that we used and would recommend them to anyone, as they looked after us so well when we needed them most, so far away from home."

If Pamela had not been covered by the cost of her treatment would have been over £700 which would have made a serious dent in her holiday budget. Given this cost for something as small as a wasp sting, this emphasises the importance of cover for more serious illness or accident.

"We aim to make arranging travel insurance as easy as possible, offering a range of cover at the click of a button” confirmed Paul Byrne, CEO, “But that’s only half the story. The level of cover we provide means our policyholders can travel safe in the knowledge that we are just a phone call away should the worst happen.

“As Pamela Miles discovered, travel insurance only costs a little, but the support and expertise you gain in an emergency is priceless. The last thing holidaymakers want to worry about when they fall ill or sustain an injury, is paying for medical assistance in an unfamiliar country or wondering whether the medical care they are receiving is the best. By investing in quality cover travellers can relax and enjoy their trip knowing that someone will be there to help when they need it most."
