London to Cape Town

A team of three drivers will set off tomorrow Saturday 16 October in an attempt to beat the world overland driving record between London and Cape Town while raising funds and awareness for the charity Help for Heroes.

Led by adventurer Mac Mackenney, the London to Cape Town attempt team will start from the RAC Club in London and cover 10,000 miles through 20 countries. One of the most challenging modern driving adventures, the attempt will take the team through some of the most inhospitable areas and difficult road conditions anywhere in the world. The endeavour has the enthusiastic support of Chevron Lubricants and the Land Rover Discovery 2 will be using Havoline products to protect the engine.

The original record was established back in 1939, the target Mac’s team has to beat is 13 days, 8 hours and 48 minutes set by Eric Jackson in a Ford Cortina GT in 1963.. Mac’s team aims to rewrite the history books with a journey time of under 13 days.

The diesel engine Discovery 2 will be using the latest Havoline lubricants and fuel additives to provide maximum fuel economy and engine protection as the vehicle battles with extremes of weather conditions and continuous driving.

The team’s progress can be viewed on the expedition’s website maxadventure.co.uk. The attempt will be raising money for Help for Heroes and has received support from patron’s Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE and Sir Stirling Moss OBE.
