Increased numbers of UK holidaymakers booking online
According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, the online travel sector grew by 18 per cent year-on-year, also recording the biggest increase for over two years in 2010.
With increased numbers of travellers making online bookings, the Post Office is reminding all holidaymakers of the importance of purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy in order to cover for loss, theft or damage to personal possessions, cancellations or unexpected medical costs.
European destinations proved popular for UK travellers this summer, according to Skyscanner. However, many UK holidaymakers heading to Europe may wrongly assume that any required medical treatments will be covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and that they may not need separate travel insurance. It is strongly recommended that all UK travellers should consider a fully comprehensive travel insurance policy that will cover them for any unforeseen events that would require medical treatments. Although the EHIC entitles the holder to the equivalent medical care as a resident in that country, it does not cover the cost of repatriation, private treatment, cancellations or personal baggage.
Post Office Head of Travel Insurance, Rachel Croft, said: “It is also important to remember that an EHIC does not act as a replacement for travel insurance as it only provides the same level of medical care as a local citizen and does not cover private treatment or repatriation. So if you’re not properly insured with travel insurance cover and have a serious accident then you or your family could be left to pick up a colossal bill.”
Post Office Travel Insurance also advises holidaymakers to consider taking out an annual travel insurance policy which may save frequent travellers money in the long run.
