La Manga Club hosts successful women’s golf event
The English Women's Golf Association's (EWGA) first overseas event has been hailed as a huge success as lady golfers from across the country flocked to the luxurious La Manga Club resort, in Spain.
The EWGA La Manga Club Golf Challenge was established as part of the five-star venue becoming the organisation's official overseas resort partner, and from October 10-15 more than 40 members took part in a competition on each of the three championship courses, as well as enjoying plenty of free time on the resort's wide range of first-class leisure facilities.
Kent duo Carole Mathieson and Claire Green were the undoubted winners of the week as the Redlibbets GC members won the pairs' competition with 42 Stableford points on the resort's North course.
Their victory came after having already claimed the team title on the opening day alongside club-mates Kam Cheema and Linda Berriman, as they stormed to victory, with a total 84 points.
The individual Stableford competition consisted of a round on each of the South and West courses and was won by eight-handicapper Carol Duncumb, of Rothley Park Golf Club, Leicestershire.
Duncumb managed to prevent a Redlibbets clean sweep, as her 64 points saw her finish seven ahead of second-placed Cheema.
Green said: "We are absolutely chuffed. We came for a nice holiday, and I can't believe we have picked up some prizes.
"We have had a great week. We came here to have a good time, to play golf and enjoy each other's company. Everything else is a bonus."
Duncumb added: "I can't think of any lady here who is not going to come again. We will certainly go back and tell everyone about it."
It wasn't just the golf that was enjoyed, with a vibrant social side to the event, including a welcome reception, gala dinner and ample opportunity for the ladies to experience La Manga Club's various restaurants and other delights.
The award-winning La Manga Club resort is the EWGA's official overseas resort partner and provides the perfect venue for its members with a wide array of sports facilities - including three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa complex. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses, more than 20 bars and restaurants and great entertainment for children.
