The launch of a new affordable 3D printer will enable architects, builders and those involved in the design of building structures to output 3D prototypes of their designs and concepts.

Costing less than £2,000, the technology has been developed by UK-based Bits from Bytes, which has created the BfB3000.

It means architect practices and building firms can impress further by presenting 3D prototypes to clients when pitching for work or presenting new ideas.

With 3D printers typically retailing at around £15,000, most architect practices and building firms cannot afford a 3D printer. But the low cost of the BFB 3000 has enabled businesses across the world to access the field of 3D printing.

A true desktop printer, the BFB 3000 prints affordable prototypes and models from computer aided design (CAD) files.

Creating objects from converted STL files on an SD card it can be used as a rapid prototyper or a rapid manufacturer and has the option of a second head that can be used to print support material.

Bits from Bytes Sales Director Andy McLaren said: “We wanted to produce a 3D printer that is affordable to buy and affordable to run so that it can be used by architect practices and those in the build sector

“So as well as presenting 3D drawings, those who make use of our technology will be able to present actual models and prototypes printed in the office, giving clients a much better understanding of the design.

“The cost prohibitive nature of 3D printers means that many practices were unable to output three-dimensional models and prototypes

“The electronics have been configured to take three heads so the machine can be easily upgraded in the future. The two-headed version allows users to print objects with voids as support material is printed in the gaps, which can later be removed. This enables a far greater range of objects to be printed.”

Accounting for 17% of all 3D printer sales worldwide ranks Bits from Bytes second in total shipments in 2009* of the 3D printer market.
