Aston Martin, the classic James Bond car, has topped a poll of dream cars in new research by Post Office Car Insurance, although most admit they're unlikely to be able to afford it in their lifetime, and are more likely to opt for a Ford Focus.

Overall 14 per cent of people surveyed chose the Aston Martin as their all-time dream car, rising to 17 per cent of men.  Surprisingly, the archetypal supercar Ferrari was down in eighth place, and Lamborghini in 11th, way behind a Toyota Prius or other ‘green' car which ranked fourth overall - showing that environmental awareness is a key factor for many when choosing their car.  This is especially true in the North East, where one in ten (nine per cent) ‘dream of green'.

When asked about whether they'll ever be able to afford their dream car, younger drivers (18-34) were the most optimistic, with a third (29 per cent) saying they'll be able to purchase it one day, and 67 per cent of those predicting they'll get their dream car before they hit 40.  Those who live in London (22 per cent) and the South East (20 per cent) were the most confident about buying their dream car, compared to just nine per cent of those in the East Midlands.

Despite the dreams of cruising around in a car that will really turn heads, overall two thirds (67 per cent) of people said they would probably never be able to afford it, and instead were likely to end up settling for something less glamourous.  Of the top ten cars people think they'll probably purchase, Ford features three times, with the Focus model topping the league.

According to Post Office Car Insurance data, Ford is also the most popular car overall for every region across the UK apart from Northern Ireland where the Renault Clio is the most popular, and London where the Volkswagen Polo is the car of choice for the majority.

Post Office Head of Car Insurance, Gerry Barrett said: "Even in the current economic outlook the nation's desire of making their dream car become a reality remains strong.  For those who do make this dream come true, they must remember there are more costs to running a car than just the initial price-tag, and insurance costs on high-end cars must be factored in.  While the Post Office Car Insurance has several Aston Martins on its books for the majority of us that particular dream will probably remain just that!

"Whatever car you drive, it's important to be properly covered with a reputable provider you can trust.  Post Office Car Insurance offers competitive rates across a wide range of vehicles - whether you've got a supercar or a Ford Focus- and our customers know they have quality cover and reliable service."

The Post Office now offers all new car insurance customers 10 per cent cash back for life on their total annual policy premium.  To qualify, customers must pick up a leaflet in branch.
