Cold snap leads to increase in car insurance claims
The Co-operative Insurance is warning drivers to take extra care in the current weather conditions to help prevent accidents and breakdowns, following the latest internal figures which show one of the busiest weekends for motor insurance claims over the year.
With further snow and wintry conditions forecast for the coming week, The Co-operative Insurance has a list of top tips to help drivers remain safe in the current conditions:
1. Check your anti-freeze levels
2. Carry some de-icer and an ice scraper
3. Check your tyres, lights and wipers
4. Top up your windscreen washer fluid and use a mixture containing de-icer
5. Make sure you carry a mobile phone, and that the battery is fully charged
6. Prepare an emergency kit for your car including a torch, blanket, warm clothing, first-aid kit, ice-scraper and water bottle
David Neave, Director of General Insurance for The Co-operative comments: "Our figures show that the cold weather is having a real impact on motorists right across the country and we have seen a 40% uplift in claims over the last weekend. With the busy Christmas travel period upon us, motorists should make sure that they drive responsibly, plan ahead and take extra time to complete their journey".
"Insurers do prepare for circumstances such as these, but motorists can also help themselves. Preparing for the winter weather doesn't need to be costly or time-consuming. There are a few simple steps which everyone can take to protect themselves and their cars this winter".
