UK drivers get wise to winter

24th December 2010 Print

British drivers appear to be getting more snow-savvy following a spike in winter inspections, says leading garage chain Halfords Autocentre.

Plunging temperatures, thick snow and the traffic chaos that comes with them appear to have driven motorists to take extra precautions to avoid breakdowns and accidents.

Halfords Autocentre reveals that winter checks, where technicians inspect vehicles to identify common winter motoring complaints, have rocketed.

Between November 20 and December 11 this year, bookings for winter inspections have shot up, compared to the equivalent period 12 months ago.

Similarly, the sale of batteries, common victims of freezing temperatures, has risen significantly.

The company has also reported a huge surge in enquiries for winter tyres and there was an uplift in general tyre sales in the last week, when compared to the previous weeks, as motorists struggle to find grip on our frozen roads.

Rory Carlin, Marketing Director at Halfords Autocentre, said: “After the experience of last winter, many motorists are taking action now in an attempt keep moving during the cold snap.

“Regularly servicing and checking your vehicle before setting out will reduce your chances of breaking down on the road, particularly before a long journey.”

“We urge all drivers to have a winter inspection to ensure they are prepared for the harsh conditions.”

The Winter Inspection is a 12-point check which specifically addresses the car parts most at risk, including tyres, alternator, antifreeze, lights, and starter motor. It costs just £30 and includes a free Duxback Windscreen Treatment, a protective layer that disperses water quicker and reduces ice forming on your screen, worth £24.95. The inspection also includes a winter consumables pack worth £10 that contains a windscreen protector, a demister pad and a quality ice scraper.
