Cheapest car insurance not always the best option

11th January 2011 Print

British motorists need to be aware of exactly what their ‘fully comprehensive' car insurance will cover them for, and shop around for the best priced policy for their needs, says moneysupermarket.com.

moneysupermarket.com analysed a sample of comprehensive car insurance policies, and found they can vary by around £30 a year for exactly the same level of cover. The research also found motorists might not be covered for everything they think they are. The analysis found some policies may not include cover for emergency accommodation or legal cover - opting for these extras could add at least another £70 to the annual premium price.

Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Millions of motorists braved harsh driving conditions on the roads this winter, and further cold weather is forecast to come. Hold ups and breakdowns on the road are much more likely in cold, snowy and icy conditions. If you have fully comprehensive cover to scour the small print with a fine-toothed comb, to ensure your policy has the level of cover you need so you don't get caught out - exclusions can be commonplace.

"For those drivers looking to take out a new car insurance policy and seeking peace of mind, especially for the winter weather conditions, checking the small print is essential to ensure you opt for a policy that ticks all the necessary boxes. Consider the extra costs you may end up paying for additions such as breakdown cover.

"It's been an expensive festive season for many of us, and with the VAT hike now in full force we'll all be watching our outgoings closely.  However, our research shows it might not always be the best option to opt for the cheapest cover possible. If you end up forking out for added extras you might end up paying over the odds at the end of the day. It really does pay to shop around and do the research in order to find the right car insurance policy for you at the best price."
