Rail Europe launches new carbon comparison tool

12th January 2011 Print

Rail Europe today launches a carbon comparison tool on raileurope.co.uk, allowing environmentally conscious travellers to compare the impact travelling by train, car and plane has on the environment.

Today’s travellers are becoming more and more savvy when it comes to choosing how to get away from it all. With it’s easy to read figures and graphs, Rail Europe’s new tool provides a quick and easy reference point, giving comparisons for 50 popular cities and ski destinations.

The figures really speak for themselves in illustrating just how damaging air travel can be for the environment.

For example, a journey from London to Strasbourg emits just 10.13 kilograms of carbon per passenger, compared with 105.65 kilograms for the equivalent plane journey. That’s 90% less carbon if you take the train. And with journey times from London to Strasbourg from around 5 hours, the train easily competes on door-to-door travel times with the plane.

For skiers keen to do their bit to protect their winter playgrounds from the effects of global warming, the train again comes out on top in the green stakes. A journey from London to Les Arcs by train emits just 12.78 kilograms of carbon, while the equivalent journey by plane emits more than ten times that amount.

So apart from the obvious environmental benefits, how else can train travel beat plane travel?

Short, or non-existent check in times and no tedious security restrictions.
Travel right into the heart of city centres – not to an airport miles away from your final destination.
No additional fees for carriage of luggage – including skis and snowboards.
Comfortable on board accommodation with room to stretch your legs and move during the journey.
For skiers wanting to gain more time on the slopes. By taking overnight trains, you can gain an additional 2 days away without the extra accommodation costs.
