Its carnival time on Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island

The Coopers Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival will return to Kingscote, South Australia in February 2011. This is not only the premier racing event for the island but also the largest tourism event of the year.

The carnival atmosphere is a huge draw for visitors who come to enjoy the racing and celebrations. The highlight of the weekend is the Kangaroo Island Cup Race Day with everything you can expect from a cup day - fashions, local food, wine and free entertainment. The racecourse is transformed into a vibrant mass of colour with marquees, signs and flags. Spectators can enjoy the atmosphere of the races from the trackside and to keep you entertained between races there is always the Crayfish picking competition!

After an exciting weekend at the carnival, extend your stay in South Australia with Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours. In honour of the KI Cup, Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours have organised a package to combine the natural wonders of the island with the excitement of the races. Their suggested itinerary is detailed below.

The Coopers Kangaroo Island Cup - Friday 18 and Sunday 20 February 2011

1 day 'Wilderness Gourmet Gallop' private tour
Enjoy either a late check out from your accommodation at around 11am or a short morning tour. Arrive at the Kangaroo Island Racecourse with your driver at around 1230pm (or later if you prefer).

With your driver wander around the Cygnet River grounds to check out the best punting sites and maybe the fashions of the fields (picking the finest filly or mare!).

Enjoy a stunning 'Island Produce' lunch starting with a selection of KI Sheeps Milk Cheeses, Pickled KI Samphire, Island relishes and Pates. Move onto Southern Rock Lobster and Prawns, superbly cooked by the fisherman themselves, Fergusons Australia. Accompanying this will be Natural Oysters and the freshest of salads. (Alternatives to seafood are available). For dessert enjoy an Australian icon, Pavlova and summer berries.

Your guide for the day will help you follow the race schedule, place bets and perhaps introduce you to the odd local punter, owner or trainer.

The day will conclude at around 1630 - 1700 when your guide will either run you out to the airport for your departure flight or back to your island accommodation. If at any time during the day you wish to head to the beach or visit any other attraction all you have to do is advise your driver and this will be arranged.

This tour can be combined with a 2 day stay and a 1 day Wilderness South Coast tour or as 3 day trip combining with the Wildlife and Wildscapes tours. For further information on the tours available, please visit their website: wildernesstours.com.au
