Spain - a walker's delight

For a Mother's Day treat that goes beyond a traditional day out, Headwater's new Porto to Coimbra Cycling holiday and Aspects of Avila walking holidays will take you to the secret heartlands of the Iberian Peninsula.

Portugal's Aveiro lagoon and the coastline south of Porto offer some of the most spectacular stretches of seaside cycling, whilst the flat landscape make it ideal for first timers to explore.

The new independent Porto to Coimbra cycling holiday starts in Porto, where shuttered townhouses tumble downhill to colourful rabello sailing boats cruising down the Douro River, passing famous wine cellars.

As you beach and bay hop south you'll pass the vibrant country markets, sand dunes, colourful marinas and the pink flamingo and colourful bird life of the lagoon with the option of detouring via 'Portugal's Venice', Aveiro. Staying in chic designer properties throughout, arriving in Coimbra, the country's capital in the Middle Ages, there's free time to explore its cobbled alleys, markets and gardens.

With Mother's day departures 27 March and 3 April, prices for the Porto to Coimbra cycling holiday start from £1268pp including flights, accommodation, breakfast and four evening meals, bicycles, transportation of bags between hotels, Headwater route notes, Headwater map kit, briefing and local information.

Meanwhile, just west of Madrid, the Sierra de Gredos makes the perfect rural escape and is a paradise for bird lovers. Headwater’s new independent Aspects of Avila walking holiday is based from a rural retreat on the edge of the Gredos Regional Park, with the jagged peaks forming a breath-taking backdrop.

Complimentary car hire is included on this trip to ensure guests can really get to know the entire region, with the historic cities of Avila, Toledo and Salamanca making great day trip options and extra nights in Madrid also available. This is a flexible walking trip so longer or shorter breaks are also available to suit.

With an extensive wine cellar of more than 500 Spanish wines the hosts will introduce guests to some of those available and wine is included on the first evening to give deserving Mums a taste of what’s on offer.

Prices for the Mother’s day departures (27 March and 3 April) start from £1179pp including flights, accommodation, gourmet breakfasts, 5 a la carte picnics, all evening meals, wine on the first night, car hire, map kit and route notes.
