Neglectful older car owners pay the price

The temptation to reduce the soaring cost of motoring by stretching service intervals is resulting in increased running costs, says engine care specialist, STP, who suggests a low-cost remedy, particularly for owners of older cars.

“The older the car, the less likely it is to be routinely serviced,” says Iain Lowther, R&D Manager of STP, “and the squeeze on household budgets as a consequence of soaring fuel prices, just adds to the pressure.”

Over 50% of cars in regular use on UK road are now over six years old*, and the engines of even the best-maintained are likely to have been contaminated by a build-up of power-sapping carbon deposits caused by normal running, leading to higher fuel consumption.

As a simple, low-cost pep-up and restorative for tired engines, STP recommends adding Petrol Treatment or Diesel Treatment to a tankful of fuel every 1,000 miles. This simple tonic will help remove carbon deposits caused by normal combustion to enable better engine efficiency, which in turn will help benefit fuel economy, aid starting, smoother running and lower exhaust emissions.

With a recommended retail price of £3.99 for a 250ml bottle treatment, regular dosing of STP Petrol Treatment or STP Diesel Treatment every 1,000 miles, costs less than 0.4 pence per mile, a cost which is far outweighed by the benefits of use.

Both STP fuel additives are suitable for engines of all types and ages, are safe for catalytic converters, and are widely-available nationwide via forecourts and accessory shops.
