Jicaro Island Ecolodge is an exquisite luxury retreat on a private island in Nicaragua. The secluded property, opened in February 2010, boasts nine split-level, naturally-ventilated lake-view casitas on a private island in the heart of Nicaraguan rainforest and boasts views across Lake Nicaragua to the lush forests and majestic Mombacho volcano beyond.

British architect Matthew Falkiner designed the ecolodge in a comfortable chic style, using only natural materials to reflect the pristine setting; all wooden furniture at Jicaro is Rainforest Alliance accredited. The casitas take advantage of the island’s gentle cross breezes, providing natural ventilation and avoiding the need for air conditioning at the property.

Relaxation is at the heart of Jicaro: swimming in the pool or round the island; lazing in a favourite shaded spot; enjoying an easily-arranged yoga session; and indulging in massages that employ indigenous products to rejuvenate the skin. A particularly peaceful highlight is being rowed to the lodge’s private pontoon for yoga practice at sunrise or sunset.

Dinner à deux can be arranged on the floating deck. In addition to yoga and massages activities include kayaking, rainforest hikes, visits to hot springs and the colonial town of Granada.

Jicaro Island Ecolodge (jicarolodge.com) costs from £118 per person per night, inclusive of breakfast, lunch and dinner served with non-alcoholic beverages, and private return boat transfer from Asese Port. Scott Dunn (scottdunn.com) offers seven night holidays to Nicaragua including two nights in Granada (Hotel Plaza Colon) and five nights in a casita at Jicaro on a full board basis, including return flights and transfers from £1,995 per person, based on two adults sharing.
