Summer events proving popular at royal retreat

As the nights get longer and the days warmer our thoughts inevitably turn to summer. Why not make it one to remember this year, by planning plenty of fun in the sun with some superb outdoor events?
Hodsock Priory, located near Blyth, North Nottinghamshire will this year launch its inaugural programme of summer events which encompasses superb outdoor theatre performances and a chance to see behind the doors of the ancestral family home of The Buchanan family.
In celebration of the nationwide ‘Museums at Night’ event (15th May), the doors at Hodsock - including the ones you don’t normally get to go behind - will be opened in a special evening event where you can discover the colourful history that has depicted Hodsock Priory over the centuries.
The Priory is also proud of its royal connections and has hosted several royal visits. Henry VIII visited one of his courtiers Sir Gervase Clifton who was living at Hodsock. He built the magnificent Tudor gatehouse that still stands today in honour of the visit. HRH Princess Margaret and HRH Prince Edward have also visited and Sir Andrew Buchanan, who is Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, was knighted in 2011 New Year’s Honours.
“Hodsock Priory has, over the years, been home to many a character and there are some delightful tales that I am looking forward to sharing with our visitors,” commented George Buchanan ninth generation resident. “Even now, Hodsock continues to diversify and evolve to ensure the wonderful history, architecture and ancestral estate is preserved for future generations to enjoy just as much as we do.”
For anyone who loves outdoor theatre, a real treat is promised when the renowned ‘Shakespeare’s Globe’ Theatre makes its first ever visit to Nottinghamshire, selecting Hodsock Priory as its venue.
‘As you Like It’ will be staged in the gardens on 28th, 29th and 30th June when the sound of laughter will fill the gardens as this much loved Shakespeare comedy is enjoyed.
And, for all the family, Cambridge Touring Theatre on Sunday 17th July will be hosting a fun filled afternoon for children of all ages with drama workshops and a chance to explore the exciting gardens before the main event – the performance of the children’s classic, ‘The Wind in the Willows’.
“We are delighted to be offering such high calibre events this year and are thrilled to be able to welcome many more people to our wonderful estate,” said George. “Ticket sales for all our events are going well and we urge you to discover this special corner of England for yourself which will come alive this summer as we celebrate British arts, history and theatre.”
Why not treat yourselves too and take advantage of the five star B&B which is available at ‘The Courtyard at Hodsock’ - a stylish and sympathetic renovation of the old estate dairy which now encompasses ten luxury suites.
