Shed loads of help for Chichester school

After months of anticipation, green fingered pupils at Kingsham County Primary School in Chichester finally have a new shed, courtesy of a local house builder.

Persimmon Homes South Coast is building new homes near the School at The Hawthorns, its development on Hay Road and when staff heard that pupils were in need of a new shed, Persimmon stepped in with a cheque to contribute towards the cost.

Kingsham, which currently has a Silver Eco Schools Award, has a Green Gang with a member in each class who meet every few weeks to help the school become more sustainable. In November last year, the Gang challenged everyone to reduce their energy usage by taking part in ‘switch off fortnight’. In the Spring term, they came up with their own competition called 'Mission: Recycle Swap', where children had to make something at home from recycled materials. Children have also developed their own Eco-code to look after all creatures great and small and to respect the three r’s; to reduce, reuse and recycle.

David Bailey, Year 2 teacher, was joined at an official ribbon cutting ceremony by pupils from the School’s Green Gang and sales adviser from The Hawthorns, Persimmon’s Pam Flynn.

Commenting on the donation he said: “Children have been learning in assemblies about the damaging effect on the environment of importing food from a long way away. This is why the Green Gang has recently turned their attention towards growing plants, flowers and some edible crops and they are really pleased to have a new shed to put their tools and equipment in.”

Pam added: “We were delighted to contribute towards the cost of the shed; we have recently launched our own ‘Grow Your Own’ schools competition where we actively encourage the nation’s youngsters to spend time getting back to basics in the great outdoors so anything we can do to encourage children to become more sustainable, has to be a good thing.”

With Persimmon’s 75/25 shared equity incentive, properties at The Hawthorns are currently priced from just £104,963.
