History & luxury at Celtic Haven's 10th century cottages

16th May 2011 Print

Combine a slice of Welsh history with a luxury coastal break at Celtic Haven’s 10th century cottages in Pembrokeshire.

The cottages have a strong heritage dating back to Norman times and overlook the newly re-opened monastic island of Caldey, which can be visited on a short boat ride. Celtic Haven is offering a three night weekend or a four night midweek break for stays until May 23 for £159 per person, which is a saving of 45 per cent off standard prices.

Celtic Haven is a collection of 26 self-catering coastal cottages sleeping from two to 12 people. The site is steeped in history and was formerly King Dyfed’s throne and the estate of Lord St. David. Many of the cottages have their own history such as being servants quarters and the stable of a Grand National winning horse. The cottages have now been refurbished to luxury standards but historical elements still remain such as metre thick walls, pitch pine beams, tiled floors and a 10th century chimney.

For a historical day out, the tiny island of Caldey can be reached by a 20 minute boat ride from Tenby. The island houses a small monastic community, which dates back to the early 1900s, although the first Celtic monastery was founded on the island in the 6th Century. There is also a Norman chapel, a 12th century church and Caldey Lighthouse, which was built in 1828. Boat rides to the island run daily, every 30 minutes, excluding Sundays and tickets are sold at Celtic Haven.

Celtic Haven is also surrounded by castles with exciting histories such as Manorbier Castle which dates back to the Iron Age and the 12th century Norman castle of Pembroke- both within a 15 minute drive of Celtic Haven.

The price of £159 per person is based on two people sharing and includes a £20 per person voucher to be used at Waves and a £30 voucher towards spa treatments at the Elemis Premier Spa. Children aged three or over cost £99, children under two are free and pets are welcome for £20 per each. Guests have free use of the indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, tennis courts, nine-hole golf course and can choose from over 80 treatments at the Elemis Premier Spa. There is also an Italian influenced Waves Bar & Restaurant.
