Smart crosstown at the Frankfurt motor show

Visitors to this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) will see the world premiere of the Smart crosstown show car, which demonstrates the massive potential of the unique and radical fortwo concept.

The crosstown show car is presented with a hybrid drive concept to show how Smart can offer an environmentally friendly driving solution.

This hybrid drive concept combines an electric motor, with an output of 23kW, and a 61bhp (45kW) petrol engine. It allows a reduction in fuel consumption of around 15% over the standard drive.

The Smart crosstown’s dimensions are similar to the current ultra-short Smart fortwo. It has an overall length of just 2.68 metres, with a width and height each of around 1.58 metres. As a comparison, the current fortwo is 2.50 metres long, 1.51 metres wide and 1.55 metres high.

The car has the distinctive DNA found in all Smart models: the tridion safety cell made from high-strength steel, which in the case of the Smart crosstown in coated with matt titanium, and contrasting body panels, in matt metallic green.

In addition, the Smart crosstown has a steeply angled windscreen, which can be removed and stowed away under the front bonnet.

The interior of the Smart crosstown is characterised by features which appear in the Smart fortwo and a host of new design features: linear instrument panel adorned with graffiti, used-look leather, skate wheels and pedals styled as mountain bike pedals.
