The Lake of Menteith Hotel & Waterfront Restaurant reaps the rewards of staycation boom

The award winning Lake of Menteith Hotel in Perthshire has welcomed new research by BDRC Continental which suggests that an increasing number of Britons are planning to take Staycations in 2011.

With recent investment in refurbishing its three lake view terrace rooms, this 17 room hotel – described as “a placid place in the heart of the Trossachs” by Peter Irvine – welcomed the news that a growing number of Brits (48%) are intending to holiday in the UK during 2011, compared to 39% in 2010 and 29% in 2009.

Ian Fleming, owner of the Lake of Menteith Hotel and Waterfront Restaurant said:

“On acquiring the hotel in 2005, we made a conscious decision to develop it in the style of a New England Waterfront Hotel, drawing on my years of experience working in the USA. This stylish and calming style has really struck a cord with our customers, so much so that 89% of our business is domestic. Challenging economic conditions mean that customers demand good value for money and we have to strive hard to make sure that we deliver. The Lake of Menteith Hotel has been completely refurbished over the past six years and we’re delighted to be completing this refurb with the unveiling of our three ‘new look’ ground floor terrace rooms, all of which enjoy spectacular lake views.”

BDRC’s research indicates that 79% of those who took a ‘Staycation’ in 2010 are seriously considering holidaying at home again, compared to only 66% in 2009.

The Lake of Menteith Hotel’s three terraced suites – Osprey, Menteith and Inchmaholme – have all been refurbished to create an oasis of calm and indulgence for guests, with the colours of the landscape and the use of natural fabrics and wall coverings drawing the location into the rooms. Only an hour’s drive from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Lake of Menteith Hotel is a popular haunt for foodies, due to its highly acclaimed Head Chef Graham Campbell – previously Scotland’s youngest Michelin Star Chef - and the hotel’s proximity to the nearby Nick Nairn Cook School.

BDRC’s research cited a number of reasons why a growing number of Brits were planning to holiday at home, including economic uncertainty, the weaker pound against the Euro and social unrest in countries such as Greece and Egypt. Additionally, air travel is regarded as increasingly unappealing due to disruptions caused by volcanic ash clouds, rising airport charges and strikes.

Ian Fleming commented; “It’s good to see more and more people tuning in to what’s on offer in the UK and it plays particularly well for us as we have specifically created a unique feel and character for the domestic market. Scotland has a fabulously rich and diverse landscape, an excellent natural larder and history in abundance, as well as a highly tuned customer service culture. Most people come to the Lake of Menteith to ‘defrazzle’ and escape the pressures of everyday life for a while. Given the pace of life which many of us live at, it’s hardly surprising that our oasis of calm and tranquillity should prove so popular.”
