El Gouna goes global to save Egypt's water

21st June 2011 Print

On 25 June 2011 El Gouna residents will be drumming and dancing to the beat to raise awareness of the water-related issues affecting both Egypt and the world.

Global Water Dances is a project featuring a 24 hour series of dances around the globe. Beginning in the Western Pacific Rim, and circling the globe, the dances will also be broadcast online.

The artistic initiative is focused on the critical need for safe drinking water and will raise awareness of the estimated five million deaths per year globally from polluted water. By 2025, more than half the world's population will be facing water-related problems.

The event will begin at 4.30pm local time, at RedSeaZone on the Northern Mangroovy Beach in El Gouna and local residents and their friends will take part in dance and drumming sessions. Visitors are invited to sit back and watch the performance, as well as enjoy a BBQ and entertainment.

The event is being organised by Nature’s Gifts, a one-stop shop in Hurghada which offers wellbeing products and there will be a speech by HEPCA, an NGO dedicated to preserving the natural resources of the Red Sea. Participants and viewers will learn about the critical role people play in protecting water supplies and all money raised will go to helping with water-related projects in Egypt.

The resort town of El Gouna, as part of Orascom Development (OD), has a commitment to conserve the environment and work with local hotels, businesses, residents and visitors to maintain, protect, and preserve the areas it inhabits. The resort has received several Green Globes and hosts the first hotels in Egypt to be awarded the Green Star Hotel Certification. Throughout the year El Gouna actively promotes environmental initiatives, education, recycling, clean up campaigns and the strict enforcement of environmental standards and guidelines.

With more than 20 years experience, OD is a leading global developer of fully integrated towns, offering hotels, private villas and apartments, leisure facilities such as golf courses and marinas along with all related facilities and supporting infrastructure.  The Swiss based company, owned by Samih Sawiris, has a strong foothold in Egypt and the Middle East and has current projects under development in Egypt, Morocco, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Jordan and Mauritius.  OD operates two fully fledged towns, El Gouna and Taba Heights, in Egypt, offering 21 hotels with more than 5,000 rooms.

Starting out as a simple real estate project almost 20 years ago, El Gouna is now OD’s flagship resort. El Gouna is built on 10km of secluded coastline, has 25,000 residents spread across islands and lagoons and is the only mature fully fledged town on the Red Sea Riviera. The year-round sunshine destination boasts world-class amenities including 14 hotels, 100 bars and restaurants, marinas, an 18-hole golf course and a variety of retail spa and fitness facilities. El Gouna also houses award winning architecture and the first hotels in Egypt to be awarded the Green Star Hotel Certification.

Picturesque Taba Heights is beautifully located among the mountain ranges of the Sinai Peninsula and is uniquely positioned overlooking four countries – Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Saudi Arabia.  The luxury resort has 5km of natural beaches and provides access to some of the world’s best dive and coral sites.  Taba Heights has been developed by the world’s best architects and its 18-hole championship golf course is promoted as the most beautiful golf course in Egypt.
