Drive for show, putt for dough! Compete in the new Puttluck tournament and win £500 worth of golf goodies! Golf pro Steve McGuinness is launching an exciting virtual golf tournament via his novel golfing app for the iPhone4 – Puttluck.

The live competition – the first of its kind to be played via an app Game Centre, with real prizes - runs in conjunction with the Open golf tournament taking place from 14th – 17th July 2011. There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs from sponsor Black Widow. The golf accessories supplier is supporting the tournament by giving one lucky winner the chance to win £500 worth of Black Widow accessories and goodies.

The special competition course in Puttluck includes a total of nine holes and will be unlocked from midnight (GMT) on Thursday 14th July until 23:59 on Sunday 17th July 2011.

Puttluck was launched in April this year and has had thousands of downloads already. It’s an innovative app with Wii-style putting stroke controls and is the most accurate and addictive golf app yet for the iPhone4. Puttluck uses an advanced physics engine and the iPhone's built-in gyroscope to give a realistic golfing experience. It has been developed by PGA professional golfer Steve McGuinness and app developer Tecmark is backed by leading golf accessories supplier Black Widow.

Puttluck allows players to swing the phone like a putter, making it one of the first of its kind on the market. According to its makers: “Ridiculous trousers are optional.”

The aim of the game

The object of the game is for players to complete the nine hole course with the lowest score in the quickest time possible. The players’ score and time are recorded and this will determine the overall winner. For example: 17.0360 (17 is the number of shots) plus 0360 (360 seconds). The score on each hole is added together, giving a grand total after the nine holes have been played. As players complete the nine holes scores will be posted onto the live leader board within the Game Centre, allowing all competitors from across the globe to monitor who is in the lead.

Competitors can play the nine holes and post as many scores as they like during the tournament.

All those who have purchased the full paid version of the Puttluck app are eligible to enter the competition and can play as many times as they wish during this time. It's open to everyone, so get your putting stroke ready!

The winner will be the player with the lowest score on Game Centre score board on Sunday 17th July at 23:59 (GMT). The winner of Puttluck will then be contacted via email to arrange delivery of the prizes.

In it to win it

Puttluck’s sponsor Black Widow has provided a fantastic selection of prizes worth over £500, including branded clothing, golf cleats, tees and other accessories. The winners name will be posted on the Puttluck website along with a photo of them with their prizes.

Steve McGuinness, golf pro and creator of the Puttluck app and tournament says:

“This is the first time anyone has launched a virtual golf tournament via an app so it’s a really exciting time for Puttluck, and the golfing world. It has taken us around 12 months to perfect the app and the tournament and it has certainly created a buzz on the golf scene. The app has had a fantastic response and we have had thousands of downloads so far. Anyone wishing to take part in the tournament, to be in with a chance of winning the Black Widow goodies, should download the app and get practicing their swing.

“From 14th July we will also be sending out hourly Tweets to keep everyone updated with the tournament – follow us on Twitter @Puttluck.”

Steve is aware that the number of people visiting golf clubs to play is decreasing and a report reveals that UK golf industry is experiencing a four per cent decline in numbers*. Steve hopes that Puttluck’s virtual tournament will encourage people to take an interest in the sport and provide a much-needed boost to golf clubs around the UK.

Puttluck is available on Apple’s App Store at [£0.59]. Work is already underway on versions for Android and other smartphones. For more details visit: puttluck.co.uk
