"Fully comp" car cover may not be as comprehensive as you think
Drivers need to be aware of what their "fully comprehensive" car cover involves, and shop around for the best policy to match their driving needs, says moneysupermarket.com.
Britain's number one comparison site analysed a sample of comprehensive car insurance policies, and found the cost and policy details can vary significantly. Motorists could find they are mistaken in thinking they are covered for everything, whereas the research found this is not always the case. For example, some policies may not include cover for courtesy car or legal cover - and opting for these extras could add at least another £50 to the annual premium.
Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Motorists shouldn't be fooled into assuming "fully comp" is "fully comp". It is crucial to be protected for all eventualities as motorists will find exclusions are commonplace. Drivers should scour the small print with a fine-toothed comb to ensure they don't get caught out.
"Anyone on the hunt for a new car insurance policy should look in detail at what is offered from the various policy types available; comprehensive, third party and third party fire and theft all offer differing levels of protection as you'd expect. It is important to weigh up the cost of opting for a fully comprehensive policy and any additions, as well as breakdown cover for example, to see the full picture of your outgoings. Shop around and take time to research the different options available in order to find the right car insurance policy for you."
