Persimmon rescues stranded buyers

A fairytale move to a brand new home very nearly had an unhappy ending for the Mountford family until Persimmon Homes threw them a lifeline.

The family were purchasing their dream home at Persimmon’s The Rydons development near Topsham in Exeter and were all packed up and ready to move when their nightmare began.

Clare Mountford, an administrator in a local school, explains: “We were living in a townhouse in the centre of Exeter and wanted a larger house with a garden further out of the city for ourselves and our children, Catherine aged ten and Daniel, seven.

“We found our perfect house at The Rydons and agreed to sell our current home through Persimmon’s Part Exchange scheme.”

The scheme meant that Persimmon marketed the Mountfords’ home and found a buyer so the family had no costly estate agent’s fees to pay and weren’t worried about getting stuck in a chain.

“As we were loading all our belongings into the removal van and just waiting for contracts to be exchanged, the solicitor called to say our buyer wanted to reduce his offer,” says Clare. “We had no choice but to reluctantly agree to his new price as we didn’t want the move to fall through.

“Our solicitor then told us there was a further hold-up because of a technicality and that we wouldn’t be able to complete that day.”

The family was devastated and had to send the removal firm away and book into a hotel for the night with no belongings.

It was then that they received a call from Persimmon Homes who threw them a lifeline. The family was offered the chance to purchase through Persimmon’s Part Exchange Plus scheme instead. Persimmon would buy their current property and the move could go ahead as planned.

The family was able to go into Persimmon’s offices that evening to sign the new deal and they were told at 9pm that night that contracts had been exchanged and the sale was completed.

Clare adds: “Persimmon rescued us. We really thought we’d have to unpack everything and move back into our old home the next day.

“We’re now living in a lovely four bedroom detached home at The Rydons and it’s just what we wanted. We’ve got a bigger garden and lots of space for the children to play in. We’re very happy.”

Persimmon’s Part Exchange Plus scheme offers a secure way of purchasing a property without having to market and sell your home through an agent. Buyers simply have to trade up in price by a minimum of 30 per cent on the development.

The scheme takes away all the worry of a purchaser pulling out and a chain breaking down which can be heart-breaking as the Mountfords found out.
