Worlds largest butterfly emerges at Stratford Butterfly Farm

Staff at Stratford Butterfly Farm are delighted to announce the imminent emergence of one of the worlds largest species of butterfly, the beautiful Queensland Birdwing butterfly, also known as Ornithoptera Priamus. This is the first time in well over a decade that this striking butterfly has emerged in the UK and it is hoped the first butterflies will emerge just in time for the half term school holidays.

The Queensland Birdwing can be found throughout Australasia where it soars majestically through the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and northern Australia. The name ‘Birdwing’ is derived from its exceptional size, angular wings and birdlike flight. Not only does the Queensland birdwing’s 22cm wingspan dwarf most other butterflies, the iridescent emerald colouring of the males spectacularly outshines them too.

Once emerged, these butterflies will be free to fly throughout Stratford Butterfly Farm’s meandering pathways and lush tropical vegetation. Visitors are able to walk amongst this most beautiful butterfly as well as many other species from around the world.

To see the incredible Birdwing butterflies and hundreds of other spectacular butterflies, insects, reptiles and spiders, visit the Stratford Butterfly Farm, open from 10:00am to 5.30pm every day of the week. Meet the minibeasts, a handling experience for children and adults to hold some of the Butterfly Farms more exotic creatures takes place every day at 11:00am and 2.30pm from Saturday 22 October to Sunday 30 October.
