Bosch provides common-rail systems for the new Tiguan

The Tiguan compact 4x4 is the first model in the Volkswagen range to be fitted with a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring common-rail technology from Bosch, designed to deliver impressive fuel consumption, reduced emissions and a more refined performance.

The new diesel engine develops an impressive output of 138 horsepower with good torque characteristics - 320 Nm at only 1,750 rpm. Fuel consumption is also at the top end of its class at 39 miles per gallon (7.2 litres per 100 kilometres).

The latest common-rail technology from Bosch not only ensures excellent performance and fuel consumption, it also makes the Tiguan engine one of the quietest four-cylinder diesel units in its class. The CRS3.2 system has an injection pressure of 1,800 bar) and consists of piezo injectors, a high pressure pump and an engine control unit all provided by Bosch. The eight-hole injectors, in combination with highly flexible multiple injection, deliver efficient combustion, low pollutant emissions and excellent engine running characteristics. Another major benefit is that this engine already complies with the 2009 Euro 5 emissions standard.

Bosch developed the first common-rail systems for passenger cars back in 1997. Over the following 10 years, the company produced more than 33 million systems worldwide and today, are available with injection pressures ranging from 1,350 - 2,000 bar. In order to improve both performance and emissions, the company’s medium term goal is to achieve injection pressures of over 2,200 bar.

In addition to the injection system for the diesel engine, Bosch also supplies the Volkswagen Tiguan with lambda sensors, starter motors, alternators, central body controllers and ignition coils.
