Moving into the catchment area of a good school is becoming more and more important for homebuyers, according to a national report.

The findings of the study reveal that 37 per cent of people with a child aged 10 or under placed securing a home and school of their choice as a top priority when moving.

They would be willing to pay an extra £12,141 to do so.

In addition, one in four people with a child aged 11-17 see schooling as a major concern and would be willing to pay an £11,564 premium for the privilege.

On average, people would be willing to pay an extra £5,663 to be able to set up home in a good catchment area.

The trend has been rubbing off on potential buyers looking towards the Scartho Top area of Grimsby – where Linden Homes is currently entering a new building phase of its popular Ferriby Rise development.

With the first of the two, three and four-bedroom homes due for completion in early 2012 – interest in the development has been heightened by the prospect of a new primary school for the area.

Coast Living is the company behind plans for a new free school in Scartho Top in 2012, which it says will offer education opportunities for youngsters aged between four and 11.

Linden Homes’ sales director Steve Woomble said: “Interest in our Ferriby Rise development has been continuous, and we are delighted that our latest phase of new homes has already attracted a number of early reservations.

“News of a possible new primary school in the area has certainly created something of a buzz, backing up the research that schools and education remain a priority for home hunters when choosing their location.”
