Redrow’s ground-breaking regeneration project, which is transforming the former MoD owned South Yard Enclave in Devonport has reached a major construction milestone as Fore Street is open to the public - following a 53 year hiatus.

Historically, Fore Street was a major thoroughfare and its prominence is well documented. It was once the main highway from Plymouth to the Royal Dockyard, as can be seen on the map of Plymouth Dock 1810.

Its’ importance grew in line with Plymouth Docks expansion, the impressive Sailor’s Rest was situated on Fore Street.

During the blitz Fore Street was severely bombed. After the war it was still an important thoroughfare, showing what looks like the Montagu Burton's premises in the distance across the street.

On Monday June 1st 1959 Fore Street was closed to all traffic, as it was taken inside the new extension of the Royal Dockyard owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Today, it has been returned to the community once more, central to, award winning house building Redrow’s Vision Development.

Barry Stiles, Regional Director Redrow Homes, said: “It is amazing to see the photos of Fore Street in its heyday. After being closed to the public for over 50 years everyone at Redrow is very proud to be handing it back to the community. It is great to see the area undergoing a renaissance that will see Fore Street become an important part of the community once more.”

One bed apartments at Vision are available from £94,995; three and four bedroom houses are available from £158,995. To find out more, visit redrow.co.uk.
