Job Description
Our client is searching for a System and Application Specialist to be responsible for system installation, administration and maintenance of all Production servers as well as deploying newly developed applications onto the systems, ensuring they work as efficiently and appropriately as described and cause no undue or unexpected problems on the existing infrastructure. Post testing and installation, this role is then responsible for ongoing 2nd level support, monitoring, debugging, escalation and management of issues through to Architects, Developers and 3rd Party vendors as required ensuring the NOC, and so the Business, is continually updated.

• Maintain IT infrastructure in order to meet the demand of operations and to support business change.
• Monitor System and Application health to ensure that device hardware, operating systems and applications function optimally.
• Identify and react to Production incidents affecting or caused by systems or applications, undertaking root cause analysis and debugging to resolve issues where possible.
• For more serious problems, work with Architects, Development and 3rd party vendors to determine fixes or develop patches to resolve application issues.
• Endeavour to resolve issues raised by business (via the NOC) as quickly, accurately, and completely as possible with a view to minimise outstanding support incidents to zero.
• Create/compile, verify, and continually revise/improve application processes and related documentation.
• Liaise with other IT teams and 3rd party vendors continually to ensure customer satisfaction.
• Provide expert consulting and advice to both Technical Operations and the wider business in the design and development of System/ Application as well as seeing the bigger picture of how these areas fit into the IT Operation as a whole.


• Evaluate capacity requirement, formulate plans and design and implement as per agreed standards.
• Develop and maintain standard operating plans and procedures to ensure all system changes and upgrades do not adversely affect the live operation.
• Work with colleagues in IT operations and across the company to deliver an effective and well maintained IT infrastructure that meets the needs of current and future operations.
• Estimate work effort required from a project perspective, execute agreed project work and produce comparisons to fine tune the Project Management process.
• Be up-to-date with the latest developments in the System/Application field.
• Be proactive in looking at ways to continue improving business systems and procedures.
• Be part of the Team’s ‘on call’ rota system.

Essential

• 5+ years proven experience working in a multi-platform environment including: -
o Solaris/Linux
o Windows 2003
o Apache
o Weblogic/J2EE/Tomcat/Glassfish experience
o NetApp SAN
o Veritas Clustering
o Experience with SOE desktop build, deployment and support
• ITIL experience, minimum Incident/Problem/Change/Configuration/Release.
• Business / Technical Analysis skills
• The role holder must have strong analytical and trouble-shooting skills coupled with the ability to deliver project work.
• Documentation / process writing skills

Desirable

• B.Sc in IT or Computing or equivalent work experience.
• 5+ years experience in the field of delivering Corporate ICT solutions, preferably within a high volume financial transaction or ISP environment.
• Professional NetApp and/or Veritas qualifications.
• A background in system integration and maintenance is highly preferable

• Knowledge of Routing (BGP/OSPF) and Switching (Trunks/VLANs)
• Knowledge of VPN and Firewall Technology
• Knowledge of F5 Devices (BigIP/Traffic Manager/3DNS)
• Knowledge of Windows Server implementation
• Knowledge of ORACLE/PostgreSQL/Sybase/MS-SQL Server
• ITIL Practitioner.
• Prince2 Foundation and/or Project Management experience

Salary is £40- 45K
