Internet boosts values of modern classic cars

9th January 2007 Print
The residual values of many classic cars have undergone an improvement over recent years thanks to larger numbers of prospective buyers finding available cars via the internet.

EurotaxGlass’s reports that ‘modern classic’ performance cars and prestige models with a high list price when new have fared particularly well.

The used car pricing experts at EurotaxGlass’s say the models that are currently enjoying noticeable price stability include:

Audi RS2
Mercedes 190E 2.3/2.5 16v
Porsche 911 Carrera (1974-1989)
BMW M3 2.3 (E30)
Toyota Corolla GT Coupe (1984-1987)
Saab 900 Lpt Aero S (1988-1990)
VW Corrado VR6
Ford Escort Cosworth 4wd
Lancia Delta Integrale
Lotus Elan Turbo

”Competition online between small numbers of would-be buyers for the best examples of particular cars is affecting pricing trends on a daily basis,” explains John Glynn, Editor of the Glass’s Guide to Older Car Values. “As classic prices climb, the fan-base for as-yet unacknowledged classics gathers momentum and prices react accordingly.”

Some niche sectors, such as American muscle cars, have been subject to remarkable price rises. “A Hemi Barracuda Convertible is now worth an estimated $2million, a figure no one would have predicted before the advent of the internet,” says Glynn.

Looking ahead, EurotaxGlass's has identified a number of other cars which are likely to become accepted as modern classics in the future. These include:

Jaguar XJS 4.0 (1991-1995)
Ford Sierra XR4i
Saab 900 Convertible (1991-1993)
BMW Z3 M Coupe
Volvo C70 GT
Nissan 200SX Touring
Mercedes E-Class Convertible
Fiat Turbo Coupe
Audi S2
VW Golf G60
