stewed! launch a revolutionary breakfast

A seriously satisfying cooked breakfast at just 325 calories, that is gluten-free, 2 of your 5-a-day and heat-and-eat ready in three minutes? A “hearty fry-up” without the fry, without the washing up and without the heart-y failure? Count me in.

Even by the groundbreaking standards of stewed! this is a revolutionary idea. A first on the market. A trail blazing, one-pot, hot savoury breakfast. Genius. Why didn’t you think of it?

Beans, Bacon and Bangers is the newest member of the stewed! family and will be available through ocado.com from April 2012 (RRP: £3.79). As with all stewed! variants, it is an inspired, original recipe by Leiths-trained chef-founder Alan Rosenthal.

With cowboy supper-under-the-stars top notes and a Great British breakfast base, it combines real baked haricot beans with smokey bacon lardons, chunks of gluten-free, British pork sausage and hunks of mushroom; all steeped in molasses and shot through with spices. For when only a cooked breakfast will do … which, let’s face it, covers most occasions.

Tuck in at the desk for those mornings when the alarm didn’t go off, freeze in for a lazy standby supper with mash, heat effortlessly over the gas stove for a glamping brunch; or stick a couple of pots in your rucksack as the perfect festival fodder to counter the Mojito tent fallout.

Put it in your diary …

April – Alan Rosenthal will be running 10 weekly workshops with the Havelock Primary School in Southall, a disadvantaged area of Ealing, West London, in which he will be joining forces again with Trees for Cities to promote their Edible Playground initiative. Using produce planted by TfC, in consultation with the school and parents, and tended by the children, Alan will be consolidating their appreciation of fresh, healthy eating and food provenance by running a series of hands-on cooking workshop. treesforcities.org

Late April / early May - after a series of delays by First Great Western railways, the first stewed! kiosk finally opens for business in Reading train station, serving hot, one-pot meals from breakfast through to dinner, with an accompanying mix and match menu of inspired accompaniments, from a porridge with fruit compote to a Beef in Ale with dumplings. The second is planned to follow, hot on the heels, in a South London location.

May 11th – Alan Rosenthal will be running one of his sell-out one-pot cooking courses at Leiths cookery school, in which he will be demonstrating a Catalan Fish Stew with Caponata, Chicken Fracciatores, Paella and Chicken and a Sweet Potato Tagine: leiths.com/enthusiasts-courses/one-pot-cooking/

May 18th to 20th – underlining their commitment to remaining a gluten-free brand (and, bar the Chickpea, Sweet potato and Feta recipe, dairy-free), stewed! will be exhibiting at Stand 102 of The Allergy and Free From Show at Olympia, London. Come and meet us, try the new recipes and stock up on (freezable) one-pots. Alan Rosenthal can also be found in the Sainsbury’s cooking zone, on Saturday 19th May at 10.30 until 11.15am; when he will be demonstrating two original recipes, Beetroot with Cumin, Lemon and Feta and British Beef in Ale with gluten free dumplings.
